How often do you need a dental check-up?
Your dentist decides how often you need a check-up, based on how healthy your teeth and gums are. The NHS says the gap can be as short as 3 months or as long as 2 years, or up to 1 year if you are under 18.
At a check-up the dentist examines your teeth, gums and mouth, asks about your general health and any problems since your last visit, and gives advice on brushing, diet, smoking and drinking. On the NHS in England a check-up is a Band 1 treatment, £27.90 when we checked on 20 October 2026. Band 1 also covers X-rays and scaling when the dentist says they are clinically needed.
A scale and polish is a clean by a dental hygienist that removes plaque and tartar. If the dentist says scaling is not clinically necessary, the NHS says you pay for it privately, at the practice's own fee. Ask which applies when you book.

Questions people ask
How much is a dental check-up on the NHS?
In England an NHS check-up is Band 1, £27.90 (nhs.uk, checked 20 October 2026). It is free if you are under 18, pregnant, have had a baby in the last 12 months or get certain benefits. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set their own charges.
Is a scale and polish free on the NHS?
Scaling is usually included in the Band 1 charge when the dentist says it is clinically needed. If it is not clinically necessary, you pay privately. The NHS page does not mention polishing, so ask the practice what its fee covers.
How do I know a practice offers this treatment?
Each profile lists the treatments that practice says it provides. Services and dentists change, so ask the practice to confirm before you book.
What should I ask before booking?
Ask which dentist will treat you, whether the treatment is available on the NHS or only privately, and for a written treatment plan and costs before any work starts.
Can I switch dentist part-way through treatment?
Yes, you can choose another practice at any time. The new practice will need to assess you and may not be able to continue another practice's plan, so ask your current practice for your records and the treatment plan, and ask the new one what it can take on.
Are the practices listed here checked?
Every practice listed was on the Care Quality Commission register of dental services when its details were read from that register, and each profile shows that date. Practices that have claimed their listing have also passed our ownership check. This site is independent and not affiliated with the GDC, CQC or NHS.
