What to expect

  • A written treatment plan and costs before any work starts
  • A clear answer on what is available on the NHS and what is private
  • The name of the dentist who will treat you; any dentist can be checked on the GDC register at gdc-uk.org
  • Your options and any risks explained in plain English
  • Follow-up arrangements explained, including what to do if something goes wrong

Is cosmetic dentistry available on the NHS?

Mostly not. The NHS says teeth whitening is not available on the NHS, and veneers are generally only available privately unless you can show a clinical need. Treatment to change how your teeth look is usually paid for at the practice's own private fee.

Whitening uses strong chemicals, and the NHS says they should only be used or sold by dental professionals. It warns that whitening from beauty salons, or with pharmacy or online kits, does not work as well and may harm your teeth and gums. The NHS also advises against whitening if you are 17 or under, pregnant or breastfeeding.

Before any cosmetic work, get the price of each item in writing and ask what upkeep will cost in later years. You can check that the person treating you is registered on the GDC register at gdc-uk.org.

Questions people ask

Who should whiten my teeth?

The NHS says whitening chemicals should only be used or sold by dental professionals, and that a dentist-prescribed kit or treatment at a dental surgery is the safest option. Check the professional on the GDC register.

Can I get veneers on the NHS?

Generally not. The NHS says veneers are generally only available privately, unless you can show a clinical need for them. Ask the practice to explain whether that applies to you.

How do I know a practice offers this treatment?

Each profile lists the treatments that practice says it provides. Services and dentists change, so ask the practice to confirm before you book.

What should I ask before booking?

Ask which dentist will treat you, whether the treatment is available on the NHS or only privately, and for a written treatment plan and costs before any work starts.

Can I switch dentist part-way through treatment?

Yes, you can choose another practice at any time. The new practice will need to assess you and may not be able to continue another practice's plan, so ask your current practice for your records and the treatment plan, and ask the new one what it can take on.

Are the practices listed here checked?

Every practice listed was on the Care Quality Commission register of dental services when its details were read from that register, and each profile shows that date. Practices that have claimed their listing have also passed our ownership check. This site is independent and not affiliated with the GDC, CQC or NHS.
