Need a dentist for this?

Tell us what you need and where. We reply by email within 1 working day. Free, and nothing is shared without asking you.

Urgent dental problem? Do not use this form: contact a dentist or NHS 111 (call 111 or use 111 online). Go to A&E or call 999 for a serious face or jaw injury, bleeding from your mouth that will not stop, or swelling that makes it hard to breathe or open your eyes.

What to expect

  • A written treatment plan and costs before any work starts
  • A clear answer on what is available on the NHS and what is private
  • The name of the dentist who will treat you; any dentist can be checked on the GDC register at gdc-uk.org
  • Your options and any risks explained in plain English
  • Follow-up arrangements explained, including what to do if something goes wrong

Is the dentist free for children?

Yes, on the NHS. NHS dental treatment is free for anyone under 18, or under 19 and in full-time education. The NHS also points out that not all dentists will take on new NHS patients, so ask the practice whether it is taking children before you book.

Your child's dentist will suggest how often they need a check-up. For under-18s the NHS says the gap can be as short as 3 months and as long as 1 year. The NHS suggests taking your child with you to your own appointments so they get used to the idea.

Braces are free for under-18s on the NHS when a dentist or orthodontist assesses a clinical need. Our orthodontics page explains how that works.

Questions people ask

Is dental treatment free if my child is 18 and still at school?

Yes, if they are under 19 and in full-time education. The NHS lists this alongside under-18s as a group that gets free NHS dental treatment.

Is dental treatment free while I am pregnant?

Yes, on the NHS. You get free NHS dental treatment if you are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months. You will usually need to show a maternity exemption certificate.

How do I know a practice offers this treatment?

Each profile lists the treatments that practice says it provides. Services and dentists change, so ask the practice to confirm before you book.

What should I ask before booking?

Ask which dentist will treat you, whether the treatment is available on the NHS or only privately, and for a written treatment plan and costs before any work starts.

Can I switch dentist part-way through treatment?

Yes, you can choose another practice at any time. The new practice will need to assess you and may not be able to continue another practice's plan, so ask your current practice for your records and the treatment plan, and ask the new one what it can take on.

Are the practices listed here checked?

Every practice listed was on the Care Quality Commission register of dental services when its details were read from that register, and each profile shows that date. Practices that have claimed their listing have also passed our ownership check. This site is independent and not affiliated with the GDC, CQC or NHS.
