Urgent dental problem? Do not use this form: contact a dentist or NHS 111 (call 111 or use 111 online). Go to A&E or call 999 for a serious face or jaw injury, bleeding from your mouth that will not stop, or swelling that makes it hard to breathe or open your eyes.

What to expect

  • A written treatment plan and costs before any work starts
  • A clear answer on what is available on the NHS and what is private
  • The name of the dentist who will treat you; any dentist can be checked on the GDC register at gdc-uk.org
  • Your options and any risks explained in plain English
  • Follow-up arrangements explained, including what to do if something goes wrong

Can you get braces on the NHS?

Children often can; adults occasionally can. The NHS says braces are available on the NHS for children and, occasionally, for adults, depending on clinical need. A dentist or orthodontist decides whether there is a clinical need.

NHS dental treatment is free for under-18s. An adult who qualifies pays the Band 3 charge, £332.10 in England when we checked on 20 October 2026, unless they get free treatment for another reason. If the assessment finds no clinical need, treatment is private and the practice sets the fee.

Private options include fixed braces and clear aligners. Ask who will supervise your treatment, how often you will be seen, and what retainers cost once the braces come off. The GDC register shows whether a dentist is on its specialist list for orthodontics.

Questions people ask

Are clear aligners available on the NHS?

The NHS page describes invisible braces made of clear plastic but does not say they are offered on the NHS. Ask the practice which appliances it provides on the NHS and which are private.

How long is the wait for NHS braces?

Waiting times differ between areas and practices, and only the practice can tell you. Ask when you are referred, and ask whether a private option would start sooner and what it would cost.

How do I know a practice offers this treatment?

Each profile lists the treatments that practice says it provides. Services and dentists change, so ask the practice to confirm before you book.

What should I ask before booking?

Ask which dentist will treat you, whether the treatment is available on the NHS or only privately, and for a written treatment plan and costs before any work starts.

Can I switch dentist part-way through treatment?

Yes, you can choose another practice at any time. The new practice will need to assess you and may not be able to continue another practice's plan, so ask your current practice for your records and the treatment plan, and ask the new one what it can take on.

Are the practices listed here checked?

Every practice listed was on the Care Quality Commission register of dental services when its details were read from that register, and each profile shows that date. Practices that have claimed their listing have also passed our ownership check. This site is independent and not affiliated with the GDC, CQC or NHS.
