How much does root canal treatment cost?
On the NHS in England, root canal treatment is Band 2, £76.60 when we checked on 20 October 2026. That one charge covers the whole course of treatment, including the check-up, X-rays and any fillings done in the same course. Private fees are set by each practice.
Root canal treatment tackles infection at the centre of a tooth. The NHS says it usually needs a few visits to your dentist, and that without it the infected tooth may need to be taken out. If you need more complex treatment, your dentist may refer you to another service, and you may be offered private treatment instead.
Emergency partial root canal treatment is one of the items the NHS lists under its £27.90 urgent charge.

Questions people ask
Is a crown after root canal treatment a separate charge?
On the NHS a crown is Band 3. If it is part of the same course of treatment, you pay the Band 3 charge, £332.10, once for the whole course rather than both charges.
What is an endodontist?
A dentist on the General Dental Council's specialist list for endodontics, the branch of dentistry that covers root canal treatment. You can check the list on the GDC register.
How do I know a practice offers this treatment?
Each profile lists the treatments that practice says it provides. Services and dentists change, so ask the practice to confirm before you book.
What should I ask before booking?
Ask which dentist will treat you, whether the treatment is available on the NHS or only privately, and for a written treatment plan and costs before any work starts.
Can I switch dentist part-way through treatment?
Yes, you can choose another practice at any time. The new practice will need to assess you and may not be able to continue another practice's plan, so ask your current practice for your records and the treatment plan, and ask the new one what it can take on.
Are the practices listed here checked?
Every practice listed was on the Care Quality Commission register of dental services when its details were read from that register, and each profile shows that date. Practices that have claimed their listing have also passed our ownership check. This site is independent and not affiliated with the GDC, CQC or NHS.
